The existence of oil in water will have a serious impact on the water environment and ecosystem, destroying the ecological balance of the water body, causing the death of aquatic organisms, damaging the aquaculture industry, extinction of precious aquatic animals, endangering human health, etc. This article will comprehensively explain the hazards of oil in water in terms of its definition, source, hazards, and monitoring of oil in water.

What is Oil in Water?

Oil in water refers to oily substances in water bodies, which usually come from industrial wastewater, domestic sewage discharge, oil spills, animal decomposition, etc.

Main dangers of oil in water

Consume DO in water, causing water quality to deteriorate. Part of the oil dispersed in water is adsorbed on suspended particles, or exists in the water body in an emulsion state, and part is dissolved in water. The oil in water consumes DO during the process of being decomposed and oxidized by microorganisms, causing water quality to deteriorate; at the same time, the oil floating on the surface of the water body affects the gas exchange at the air-water interface, forming a layer of oil film. As a result, the water body cannot replenish O2 from the air in time, which further promotes the deterioration of water quality.

Oil pollution can poison fish and damage fishery production. Oil film and oil mass can stick to a large number of fish eggs and young fish, causing great harm to fish reproduction.

How to Monitor Oil in Water?

The Oil in Water Analyzer is specially designed for testing the concentration of trace oil (hydrocarbons) in water. It uses advanced ultraviolet-fluorescence detection technology. It does not require chemicals, consumables, pollution, and is a safe and environmentally friendly online monitoring instrument. The open sampling and detection technology is very easy to clean and suitable for harsh working environments. The oil in water detector is an instrument used to detect the emission limit of petroleum pollution in refining wastewater.

Yosemitech Y616-B Oil-in-Water Sensor is an online oil-in-water measuring instrument directly installed on the industrial site. It takes the tiny amount of oil in water as the measurement target, highlights the practicality and stability of the on-site measuring instrument, and takes simple installation and maintenance-free operation as the product technology highlights. It combines a variety of optical wavelength sensor technologies, is a continuous, online operation, and can accurately measure oil in the range of 0-50ppm even in turbid produced water.
